Q. What is Blackboard?

A. Blackboard is a software application that provides both a student portal and a course management system for use on University campuses. Blackboard provides a way for students,  faculty, and staff to keep up with campus activities, to become active in the wide variety of organizations and clubs that exist on campus and communicate with their classmates anytime from anywhere where they have access to the internet. It also provides a set of utilities that assist faculty in posting course materials on the web, managing their courses and communicating with their students. Cal State University, East Bay (CSUEB) purchased a license to run the Blackboard system and maintains it on bb1.csueastbay.edu. It can only be accessed through a browser interface such as Netscape, Internet Explorer, Safari, or Firefox.   back to questions

You must first activate your NetID logon before you can login to Blackboard. Additional information on activating your NetID is available at http://www.csueastbay.edu/netid. If you have any problems with your account, please contact the CSUEB Help Desk at 885-HELP ( 885-4357).  back to questions

Your NetID and password will NOT change each quarter. Once you are no longer receiving an invitation to register or your affiliation needs to be renewed, your account will remain on the system but will be inactive. To activate it you will need to have an academic reason and make an exception request to the CSUEB Computing Help Desk at 885-HELP (885-4357). Instructors may need to contact Human Resources.  back to questions

Q. How do I access my online course or organization?

A. Go to the California State University, East Bay Blackboard login page at http://bb1.csueastbay.edu/ and login by typing your NetID and password. After you login, you will have access to your courses. To select your course, go to the "My Courses" box and click on your course name.

instructors can access both unavailable and available courses at all times by clicking on the "Courses" tab.  Also, instructors can make courses available for students at any time.   back to questions

Q. How do I tell which course is which?

A. When you click the "Courses" Tab, a list of *all* of your Blackboard
courses (past, present, Master, others) show up. Each course has a
"Course ID" that looks like something like this:

20061MATH100501

If you look at it like this: 2005--2--MATH1005--01, this is what the numbers mean:

2006 = year of class
1 = quarter (1=Winter, 2=Spring, 3=Summer, 4=Fall)
MATH1005 = Course ID
01 = Section number

The class listed above is Math 1005, Section 1 taught in the Winter quarter of 2006.   back to questions

Q. When are current quarter courses made available for students to access?

A. Regular University courses are made available to students one school day before classes start. For example, if classes start on Monday, students will be able to access courses the week before on Friday or if classes start on Thursday, they will be able to access courses the day before on Wednesday. Note: Instructors can make courses available for students at any time.  back to questions

Q. What do I have to do to have a Blackboard site set up for my courses?

A. There is nothing you need to do to have a Blackboard site set up for any of your courses. Blackboard will automatically set up a Blackboard site for each class listed in the schedule of classes each quarter.

 back to questions

Q. When does my Blackboard course site get deleted?

A. Your Blackboard course site will not be deleted for one year. It is a good idea to make a backup copy of  any content you add to the course before it is permanently deleted. Instructors can archive the entire course. At the end of every quarter the courses will be made unavailable automatically. This will lock students out of accessing the course but instructors will still have access. Instructors can also make previous quarter courses available or unavailable for students to access at any time.  back to questions
Q. How do I customize "My Courses" module?

A. The My Courses module can now be configured to show more than just the  current quarter’s courses. To customize the module:

1) Login to Blackboard
2) Locate the “My Courses” module.
3) Click the pencil icon in the upper right corner in the module
4) Check the appropriate boxes to show Unavailable Courses and/or Other  Courses in the module
5) Click Submit

The configuration you chose will appear in the My Courses module.   back to questions

Q. My class is NOT listed under "My Courses" Tab.  What do I do?

A. Students are automatically enrolled from the SAIL system. When your course is listed in "MYINFO", you should be able to access it when you login to Blackboard. To check the status of your enrollment, contact the department administrative staff. You may also need to contact Enrollment Services if there are other issues about enrollment that need to be resolved.

Instructors are automatically assigned in courses in which they are the instructor of record on SAIL. If you know you are teaching a course and it does not appear in your Blackboard list, contact your department office and verify you are listed in SAIL as the instructor of the course.    back to questions

Q. How do I access my online organization?

A. Go to the California State University, East Bay (CSUEB) Blackboard login page at http://bb1.csueastbay.edu/ and login by typing your NetID and password. After you login, you will have access to your organization. To select your organization, go to "My Organization" box, and click on your organization name. Another way to access your organization is to click on the "Organization" Tab at the top of the window, locate the organization name and click on it.   back to questions

Q. My organization is NOT listed under "My Organizations" Tab.  What do I do?

A. Some organizations have self-enrollment enabled with an access code so you need to contact the Leader of the organization directly. If you need to be added as a Leader in an organization, call the CSUEB Computing Help Desk at (510) 885-4357 during business hours, 8 AM to 4 PM, Monday - Friday, closed Saturday, Sunday, and holidays or send an e-mail to helpdesk@csueastbay.edu    back to questions

Q. I see some organizations I would like to get involved in. How do I join these organizations?
