RE:         Permanent Removal of Old BB Courses on June 19

We have not removed any courses from the Blackboard server since Blackboard was first implemented in 2001. We need to begin removing courses on a regular basis to free up server space for current courses and to reduce unreasonably long course lists on course listings in BB. The ongoing practice will be to retain courses for 4 academic quarters after the course is offered with removal occurring during the fifth quarter. This duration of courses on the Blackboard system will satisfy grade challenges and incomplete coursework.

We are beginning the process by removing courses that were created prior to Spring Quarter 2002. This includes the following quarters:

20011

(Winter 2001)

20012

(Spring2001)

20013

(Summer 2001)

20014

(Fall 2001)

20021

(Winter 2002)

These courses will be permanently deleted from the Blackboard system on June 19, 2003.

This procedure will become a regular quarterly activity and courses older than four quarters will be removed each quarter. Each quarter, four weeks before the removal process, an announcement will be sent to instructors announcing the date of removal.

The Blackboard system is backed up to a tape-based recovery system. The tape system is for disaster recovery only and it is not possible to recover individual courses.

It is recommended that instructors “archive” their courses if they wish to keep their own copies of previous course materials.

Please note that Assessments, Gradebooks and Surveys are not saved when the archive is made so you will need to back up this data separately if you want to maintain it.

This is only necessary if an instructor wishes to maintain his or her own archive. This archive is in a form that is not “readable” unless restored to the Blackboard system. This archive must be returned to CSUH Blackboard support for restoration to the system.

An upgrade to the Blackboard system, planned for Fall 2003, offers improved archiving.

For assistance with archiving courses or backing up Assessments, please contact Bernie Salvador in the Office of Faculty Development (510) 885-2562 or the Blackboard Support Team in ITSC (510) 885-4872, Monday through Friday from 8:30 AM - 5:00 PM.
